So how did Roots emerge?

Been asked often as to how i ended up here..Usually I nod, grin and shrug my shoulders deflecting the question usually not willing to get into details. Here is some insight 😉

A piece I had written which was intended for Walkout Walkon. Still waiting on their feedback. Enjoy!

earlier days

Roots officially came into existence as of january  2012 (approximation). The first 6 months we lived in the thrall of just having an open space. Most of our activites were not too directed or focused but just being  inspired by cohabitation. We were much more like a guest house in gestation becoming something else.

At our friend Sailajas place/. This was back when Mallik, Azeer, WIshall and Rachana were staying @ roots.

Meni Was sent to us around June by our good friend Nina Osswald

Below is a sample of a brochure that was made by Muralidhar Acharya. We are not actively pursuing all the contents of the brochure as of yet though we have dabbled with a seva cafe or two. Created around jan of 2013 hopefully one day we can bear witness to all of these magnificent intentions 🙂

an unusual visit (April 25th, 2013)

Perhaps, one of the most befuddling instances at roots was the arrival of two very identical looking pups exactly 5 months after the demise of Roots and Shoots.  april 25th for me marked the return of Roots and Shoots ableit this time they were both males. These two dogs both walk up to my second floor balcony and greet me like a good ol’ timer. No fear just a endearing approach towards me while glaring at me in the eyes. What baffles me is that stray dogs never even walk into the premises no less walk up two floors to unabashedly feel at home. 5 months to the date of the passing of roots and shoots im faced with two identical looking dogs of same size and stature greeting my at my doorstep. As sentiment would have it, I decided to keep them and saw the as an unresolved responsibility. I asked my friend srinu who lives on the premises if he ever saw these dogs before and suprisingly tells me he noticed them at the old dogs gravesite nearby. So taking the cue I decided to call them Roots and Shoots once again. Roots is still with us today going into october, healthy and strong, but unfortunately Shoots is no longer with us as he suffered and expired from canine distemper few weeks after his arrival to our space.

Another interesting tidbit was the fact that Natale left within a week of the first dogs dying. Following the arrival of the new pair we had a different Natalie arrive a week later to come stay at roots.  She had come with her friend Tatjiana and both were visiting from Germany. The entire correlation of events was perhaps the most perplexing sense of dejavu I have ever experienced!

A pic taken within a week of the new dogs arriving. Cant remember whether this was roots or shoots..

Intentional Community?

Being nicely nestled in between one of the greenest surroundings in the city and having a well partitioned bungalow layout made Roots a perfect place for an urban based intentional community. So what is an Intentional community exactly. According to Wikipedia “the purposes of intentional communities vary in different communities. They may include sharing resources, creating family-oriented neighborhoods and living ecologically sustainable lifestyles (ecovillages). Many intentional communities focus on the importance of living and sharing life together, as opposed to the perceived trend of independence in Western culture.” See

Though originally intended to take on this track Roots has morphed into many things often times making its basis a bit foggy. As of now  theres a whole smorgsboard of terms that determine it. Hacker space, maker space, intentional community, coliving, coworking are all good candidates for what Roots has been evolving toward. However, all these words can cause so much confusion!!! To me all of these are not mutually exclusive though they have individual strains that distinguish them. Ultimately when your placemaking it is often times hard to deduce what the place will be but whatever the final product is will  hopefully be some type of hybrid of all the aforementioned, a unique creation unto itself. The process of discovery is whats so beautiful. Lets let it unfold!
